Fitness

I ______ be fit? (Should / have to / need)

Meaning of the first two verbs and the noun, as is in Dictionary.com,

Should: intend to, or expect to

Have: to possess; own; hold for use; contain

Need: a requirement, necessary duty, or obligation

Let me start with the current scenario. ” Fitness” is the new glam word or, rather, talk of the town. Everywhere these days, celebrities, politicians, laureates, entrepreneurs, and the “IT folks” like ourselves, do everything under the sun to stay fit, which is a good thing.

We entrust our fitness on a truckload of gizmos that are either wearable or tracked through our devices. Eventually, these devices store tons of data on metabolic activities, the heart rate, the carbs burnt, and the number of steps we take in a day and what not.

Wearing a Smart Band is the trend these days. An individual wearing one such device is both a tech-savvy and a fitness freak. Alternatively, shall we say fitness cautious? This person is part of the “Fitness Freaks” group and is always on the toes, with her/ his diet follows the instructions of the app judiciously. This “Fitness band” literally controls every physical activity of this person.

Now, how much of this is good? To gauge one’s fitness, is it the function of the human brain or an inhuman app? Isn’t the human body intelligent enough to send messages to an individual to get going on a workout? Do you really need an app to tell that you have fallen short of the set number of steps you “Should” have taken for the day? Moreover, once this notification pops you, the “Need” to walk around arises such that you achieve the target, else the app feels sad. Though you “Have” to please your app, there is still resistance to close the target since there are other priorities.

Going back to the question set as the header for this write, we ought to understand the necessity to stay fit. Is this an intention, a requirement, or a desire? Has technology overpowered us so much that we let gadgets tell us of our wellbeing? This is quite a debatable question, and my friends would orate about the good things about fitness fiesta with the bands and the apps they have. But then, my contradiction to them is – what happens when these gizmos cease to exist? How much of AI can you still exploit? What next? Why can’t you answer your body’s call and stay fit?
